Movie #20 - Underworld: Awakening
Oh boy. Where to begin. I’m not sure what some people do or don’t already know about this movie so I’m just going to insert a **SPOILER ALERT** right now. I’m gonna review this one more in depth than usual. If you don’t want to know anything before you see it, look away. You’ve been warned.
I’ve been obsessed with these movies since I was about 11 years old. Now, waiting as long as I have been for them to finally conclude the second movie, I guess I had my expectations set a little too high. Anyway, I loved and hated this movie at the same time. I’m still not really sure how I feel about it. I understood and almost accepted the fact that Michael wasn’t going to be in this movie. When asked in an interview if he was going to be coming back to play Michael, Scott Speedman said “No.” Well, I guess I misinterpreted Scott not being in this movie as Michael not being in this movie. Now, I’m assuming that Michael was computer animated because no one is credited as playing Michael on IMDB. Regardless, I could just tell that it wasn’t really him and the whole idea of someone who isn’t Scott Speedman playing Michael, whether it be an animated version of himself or not, just pissed me off. I hate when they do that. I also wish Len Wiseman had actaully directed this movie. It just felt different. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was that made it so but that also irked me. I didn’t feel like the writing was that great either. Some lines that were spoken just felt a little forced and really out of place imo. I feel like too much time was spent on trying to make the 3D look cool instead of actually concentrating on the story. As for the lycans, I personally loved the lycans in Underworld: Evolution. They were men in suits, not animated, and I felt like they looked more realistic. As realistic as lycan suits can look, anyway. All the lycans in this movie were computer generated, and personally I thought they looked like over-sized spider monkeys.
Now, some good things. Kate Beckinsale was her usual BAMF self, which made the movie enjoyable. Lots of action. The 3D effects were actually pretty awesome. I have no complaints there. I also really started to like her daughter as time went on and I think they had a good dynamic. When Selene told her daughter that she had Michael’s eyes, and that he was the only man she ever loved and that her heart was broken, I died. I wanted to give her a hug.
All in all, the movie was definitely entertaining. The ending definitely led you to believe that there was going to be a 5th movie, and that Michael would definitely be in it, if not the center plot of the story. Hopefully it will actually be Scott Speedman in the flesh playing him this time. I’m just slightly pissed because I left this movie with hope that they will make another one to finally bring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman together again, and thats exactly how I left the second one. So nothing’s really changed on that front. But other than all that, it was a pretty decent movie.
